Bowls
Carving a bowl from a large piece of beautiful, old oak has to be one of the most enjoyable things I do. There's something so special about taking a block of heavy wood and slowly forming it into such a universally recognisable and loved shape. Bowls are basic, primal objects, a symbol of sharing and nourishment and as humans we are drawn towards them. When I'm carving a bowl this is what I'm tapping into and attempting to evoke in my designs.
Vases
I've been carving vases longer than any other piece. The shapes and designs, species of wood and textures, colours and sizes have all changed with time, yet I still feel there is is much more to learn, so many designs yet to be explored.
Spoons & scoops
Spoon carving is a curious thing. Just like with the bowls, when we are carving a piece you can feel the ancient history involved. As humans we 'need' bowls and therefore we equally 'need' spoons. The two are married to each other. It's a simple union born out of necessity! Over the years of carving spoons I've come to realise the mad depth of appreciation we have for spoons and I love being involved with the feeding of this obsession.
